There are new rules for how political parties nominate candidates in the 2031 Scottish Parliament Election. Political parties that elected MSPs at the 2026 election are automatically entitled to nominated candidates. Other parties must collect signatures from voters approving their candidacies.
This has replaced the previous system of submitting a £500 deposit in each constituency and region a party wishes to nominate candidates for. This process ensures that you can use your vote in confidence on election day, knowing that all parties listed on your ballot paper have been approved by voters like you.
